about

'Why Pretend' is about trying to fool yourself into believing something is true because you're not willing to forgive or accept something that you have control over. If someone you used to be with is good for you, but you're being stubborn because you think you can do better, or you're not willing to settle because of some small formality or conjured up condition in your head that keeps you from actually getting close to someone. In the end, you can't pretend anymore, so you might as well embrace what is real.

lyrics

Well aside from the remains
It's like you kept saying
If it works or it hurts
It's probly instantaneous
We even kept our distance
We both wanted to accept
That wherever we land could prove happenstance

So it makes no sense
Why I'd pretend
Not to let this forgiveness
Color my view again
It makes no sense why I'd pretend

Graves we dig out of
Become the smiles we're proud of
In many ways we are alike but
From a different take in a different place
Some too tender to touch
Some are a little bit much
And aside from the remains
We're all just saying

That it makes no sense
Why I'd pretend
Not to let this forgiveness
Color my view again
It makes no sense why I'd pretend
